About the American Film Institute

AFI is a national institute providing leadership in screen education and the
recognition and celebration of excellence in the art of film, television and
digital media. AFI trains the next generation of filmmakers at its
world-renowned Conservatory, maintains America's film heritage through the
AFI Catalog of Feature Films and explores new digital technologies in
entertainment and education through AFI's New Media Ventures. As the largest
nonprofit exhibitor in the US, AFI ON SCREEN encompasses the annual AFI FEST
presented by Audi: AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival and
SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival, while offering
year-round programming at ArcLight Hollywood and the AFI Silver Theatre and
Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. AFI AWARDS, the annual almanac
for the 21st century, honors the most outstanding motion pictures and
television programs of the year, while AFI's 100 Years . . . series has
ignited extraordinary public interest in classic American movies. And,
during the past 32 years, AFI'S LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD has become the
highest honor for a career in film.
At its eight acre campus in Los Angeles, in the hills above Hollywood, AFI
serves as a point of national focus and coordination for the many
individuals and institutions which make up the moving image community. In
this effort, AFI is guided by four primary missions:
Training the next generation of filmmakers;
Presenting the moving image in its many forms to a national and
international public;
Preserving America's great movie heritage; and
Redefining the moving image in the new digital era.
Founded in 1967, the original AFI mandate continues to guide the institute
but as technology has brought storytelling to the world in ways that were
not envisioned 35 years ago, today AFI has grown to encompass all aspects of
the moving image arts.
At its prestigious Conservatory, AFI trains many of the world's most
prominent filmmakers with alumni including directors Jon Avnet, Carl
Franklin, Amy Heckerling, Mimi Leder, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, John
McTiernan and Ed Zwick. The AFI Conservatory is formally accredited by the
Accrediting Commission of Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Association of Schools
of Art and Design.
AFI coordinates the preservation of America's great film heritage through
its AFI Film Collection held at the Library of Congress and other American
archives, the American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films, the
definitive reference book on American film (available online to AFI members)
and the AFI Silent Film Database which features complete information about
American silent feature films available for viewing on film, video and DVD,
as well as information about the films from the AFI Catalog.
AFI has the most extensive non-profit exhibition program in the US with over
3,000 film events throughout the year. The recently-opened AFI Silver
Theatre and Cultural Center is a state-of-the-art three theatre complex,
offering a year-round program of the best of American and international
cinema, both classic and contemporary in Silver Spring, Maryland, seven
miles north of the White House . Since 1987, AFI has been presenting the
best new movies and moviemakers at its annual film festival (AFI FEST) in
Los Angeles. AFI's film programs are also held throughout the year at the
ArcLight Cinemas and Skirball Cultural Center (both in Los Angeles) and the
AFI National Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, among other
locations.
AFI is perhaps most recognizable to the public through its annual,
nationally-televised Life Achievement Award, the highest honor given for a
career in film and television. On June 12, 2003, Robert De Niro received the
31st AFI Life Achievement Award. In 1998, AFI began its AFI's 100 Years
series, an ongoing celebration of the first centennial of American movies
which raises worldwide interest in film history. The sixth program, AFI's
100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains, aired on CBS on June 3, 2003. AFI
Almanac, established in 2000 to record the current century in film arts, is
the institute's annual recognition of outstanding motion pictures and
television programs along with the year's moments of significance.
AFI New Media Ventures (NMV) manages AFI's online and digital production,
distribution and training activities. NMV has developed K-12 digital
filmmaking coursework, student mentoring and teacher training programs in
the AFI Screen Education Center and online film studies. NMV conducts the
AFI Digital Content Lab, formerly AFI Enhanced TV Workshop, a prototype
production program for professional television producers and other digital
content developers, now in its eighth year.
AFI is guided by a prestigious Board of Trustees-chaired by Sir Howard
Stringer-and a Board of Directors-chaired by Jon Avnet and John F. Cooke-and
is comprised of key figures from the entertainment, business and academic
communities. It is led by longtime Director and CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg
and Jonathan Estrin, Executive Vice President.

Looks like it might be the AFI list. Of course it is a bullshit list,
because I didn't see Spaceballs on it.

I'm Jewish (Hasidic) and I really resent your comments. Maybe one day you
will learn that the whole "conspiracy theory" is only in your head.

9. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)
no matter how many Jews there are in Hollywood.. there's no way this
movie rates this high ahead of some of the later classics... no F'N
way
I'm Jewish (Hasidic) and I really resent your comments. Maybe one day you
will learn that the whole "conspiracy theory" is only in your head.
Schindler's List was a wonderful film and taught us all about compassion and
human kindness.
if it took you a movie to learn that you are simple minded... I myself
am Hasidic and resent your implication...

What ever happened to turning movies INTO TV shows?
I think it ended with Private Benjamin and Battlestar Galactica.

Well, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

for more S. Kubrick, R. Altman, and J. Ford films. While I wouldn't

Sure, it gets some points for the burning of Atlanta scene, but I don't
think it's in the top 100. The "any film that has a following as rabid
as this one" doesn't strike me as a valid criteria. I note that the
"rabid" following is mostly based on a pretty sickening
pro-old-Confederacy impulse that wants to grossly over-romanticize the
old south. But I don't take off points for bad politics ("Birth of a
Nation" clearly belongs on this list). I do, however, take off points
for bad melodrama, not matter how many racists tear up at it.

Lost in Translation is ok for a blatant rip-off of a Wong Kar-Wai
movie. (not a specific movie, just the feel of them)

Of course, but Fargo is really no more popular today than most of the Coens'
other films. It certainly hasn't created its own subculture, like, say The
Big Lebowski. Maybe in 1997, when the 'indie' film was still a neat novelty
and all those Joe Averages thought they were living on the edge because they
saw a film with people talking funny, but I don't think its mainstream
appeal is still around. If anything, it's only slightly above those films
that I mentioned as far as popularity goes nowadays.

The fact that "The General" is not on this list renders it null and void
anyway.
I could make a case for "Groundhog Day" too. Easily one of the most
underrated films of all time.
I liked "Groundhog Day" a lot, although that reminds me of how much I
liked "Lost in Translation," which I might nominate for this list,
although it would be better to get some distance before deciding.
I liked Lost in Translation, but it'd be a cold day in hell that it made a
list like this.

I'm snipping most of this, because I don't really have much to argue, but a
quick note...
Post by j***@utnet.utoledo.edu
I liked all those films, and consider Miller's Crossing criminally
under-rated, but are we using popularity/cultural impact as a criteria
or not?
Of course, but Fargo is really no more popular today than most of the Coens'
other films. It certainly hasn't created its own subculture, like, say The
Big Lebowski. Maybe in 1997, when the 'indie' film was still a neat novelty
and all those Joe Averages thought they were living on the edge because they
saw a film with people talking funny, but I don't think its mainstream
appeal is still around. If anything, it's only slightly above those films
that I mentioned as far as popularity goes nowadays.
I was going to argue that Fargo had broader appeal than Miller's
Crossing, but I'm laughing too hard at the "all those Joe Averages
thought they were living on the edge ...." line. But why did you have
to use the name "Joe"?

Jarmusch's films move me about as much as he moves cameras. He's exactly the
kind of filmmaker I've never taken to: too quirky to not realize he's
boring.

I could, however, put a David Lynch film or two on this list. Blue Velvet
comes to mind.

I'm still really surprised that "The Shawshank Redemption" didn't show up on
thsi list somewhere. Not that I think it should (I like it ok, but it's
highly overrated IMO) but it's exactly the kind of feelgood safe picture
that AFI tends to glom on to.

As someone who goes on different "kicks" I have all of these movies on
DVD except for the ones that aren't out in that format
(African Queen
Jazz Singer
King Kong) also the Star Wars Trilogy in VHS original AND redo alongside
the DVDs
A general statement to the "never seen it dont intend to crowd) I found
some very good stuff that might have gone unnoticed otherwise.
Just an observation

4. GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)
Complete crap. Shouldn't be in the top 100, and ranking it this high
is a bad joke.
It's still made more money than any other movie in American history
(I'm not getting into that argument again, people, but it's true). It
took a lot of chances as well. Granted, I can't watch it all the way
through but it inspired a lot of yesterday and today's filmmakers.

9. SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)
A decent film, but not top 10. Probably near the bottom of the top
100.
Spielberg. He has a lot of power in Hollywood. As does Lucas. You'll
see their stuff higher than they should be. And no, I'm not joining the

Not my cup of tea, but probably top 50
You know? It's right where it should be. They did a hell of a lot of
breakthrough techniques for this movie. Some of the stuff I still wonder
how they did back then without computers. Check the dance sequence near
the end when he's "flying" over the city. There are about 50 things

It wouldn't even be in my top 100. I read the book about 2 weeks
before I saw this for the first time. The movie managed to pull out any
humanity, any soul, any vision and any point the book made. It was shot

Omissions. I agree re "The Great Escape,"; also, why no love for early
comedians like H. Lloyd and W.C. Fields? I'm going to insist that
"This is Spinal Tap" is one of the top 100 American movies--top 50 at
least, in my book, and "Stand By Me" is better than some of the films
listed. Although they are already represented, I could make arguments
for more S. Kubrick, R. Altman, and J. Ford films. While I wouldn't
put it in the top 50, I was surprised "Sophie's Choice" wasn't listed.
Also, maybe "A Gentlemen's Agreement," "Twelve Angry Men," "Matewan"

First, the whole allegory of "America losing her innocence" has been
done to death, but we're always confused about when that innoncence was
lost. The Civil War? Wars with Indians? WWI? WWII? Viet Nam is way
too late.

It was essentially an independent movie. If the movie failed then
there would be no more Selznick pictures ever. It would have been a
long, long time before anybody would attempt to make not only an epic
again but also independently produce (discounting UA which was changed
by this point as well). The depth of field, cranework, costume design,
etc. There is a lot there that really hadn't been done as well up to
that point. Yeah, it has its problems with representation but so did the

I'm surprised you would say this. I hate this movie for two reasons.
First, the whole allegory of "America losing her innocence" has been
done to death, but we're always confused about when that innoncence was
lost. The Civil War? Wars with Indians? WWI? WWII? Viet Nam is way
too late.
Second, this was the most prominent example of a truly terrible trend
in Hollywood of grossly romanticizing mental disabilities.
I agree with that. I love it in spite of these problems (and the
ending). Believe me, that's not an easy task but it works. Maybe I just
like the idea of somebody being so involved but being oblivious to it
and/or just not caring. To me, the movie is a series of moments with
humor around it. Writing this now, I think I like the way it buries pop
culture and says "Do your own thing." I dunno.

90. THE JAZZ SINGER (1927)
For what it was, about right.
Crippled film artistry for at least a decade.
You really think so?
Definitely. Films were at this great point developing this language
and being innovative as hell telling stories through 90% images. Once
the talkies started up this was forgotten in favor of hiding a
microphone in a flowerpot and keeping the cameras static and allowing
the dialogue to carry the movie. In many ways, we still haven't
recovered and audiences don't seem to understand the motion picture
language.

These AFI lists always suck.
Yeah, but they give us these opportunities for time-wasting discussions
about matters that are in significant part subjective.
It's better than sending out resumes....

This will probably get my geek card taken from me but I have never
even heard of this one.
I was reaching for your geek card, but then I read your next post your
reference to what "Lost in Translation" reminds you of totally lost me.
Anyway, rent this film if you can. I'm betting you'll like it.
Wong Kar-Wai is a Hong Kong director. Check out "Chungking Express"
and "In the Mood For Love" and you'll see where Sophia Coppola got most
of her inspiration and style for LiT.

50. BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969)
Maybe bottom of the top 100.
I'm surprised you said that. I figured it would be one of your
favorites. (Still could be, but I'm not getting any indication)
Why do you think it would be one of my favorites? I like it enough to
put it in the top 100 American movies of all time, but not higher than
50.
It just seems to be a favorite for your generation. Yeah, I'm
generalizing.
A "favorite of my generation"????? I just don't know where to begin.
Asking you how old you think I am? Quoting the Who? Contemplating the
assumption that whatever generation I'm in, I'm typical of it? Noting
that "favorites" of *your* generation (I'm guessing) include mall-core
music and Britney Spears and therefore wondering if you . . . . Nah,
that last one would be too low.--Joe (n.j.) [mWo]

as for most of the films you haven't seen? i advise you watch at least 50%
of them, most of them are actually very good.

FunkyM doesn't know, he usually makes his mind up about things
before he sees them, tastes them, or if possible, even hears
of them. Life is so much more exciting that way!
